Medicare fraud is a sad fact. People, whether doctors, insurance companies or patients, try to make “free money” that ends up costing seniors like you in the long run. But you can also do a lot to make sure that you and your family are kept safe.
In fact, Florida’s Senior Medicare Patrol is taking it very seriously. A few employees are teaching seniors about potential trouble spots that could indicate a doctor or other individual isn’t doing the right thing. They’ve already saved millions of dollars, just on the strength of a couple of hundred volunteers.
While there are similar programs in other states, you don’t need a fancy badge in order to protect yourself. Keep in mind, even if you don’t do anything wrong, you could be affected by fraud if you have to switch doctors or assisted living homes or hospitals due to the bad choices of others.
Ignore door-to-door salesmen who say they are from Medicare or a health insurer. You’ll get notice of changes or issues with your coverage via the mail or phone.
Check your bills just like you would any other bill, and make sure that nothing stands out, especially two of the same things.
Make sure that you visit people you trust and keep your records and bills safe. If you live in a facility, consider entrusting older documents with a loved one or your attorney.
Consult loved ones and your doctor and don’t be pushed into doing anything you’re not comfortable with in terms of changing your plans or seeing a new doctor.
